Heart Failure in Women
Common causes, distinctive clinical contexts and monitoring priorities in women with heart failure.
Physician-reviewed patient informationOverview
Hypertension, diabetes, valve disease, coronary disease and cardiomyopathy may lead to heart failure in women. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is particularly common.
Peripartum cardiomyopathy and cardiotoxicity from selected cancer treatments require specific attention. Breathlessness, swelling, rapid weight gain and declining exercise capacity should be monitored.
Treatment is tailored to the cause, ejection fraction, rhythm, kidney function and other conditions. New or worsening symptoms deserve timely review.
