Hypertension and Cardiovascular Risk

Why high blood pressure is often silent and why correct measurement and long-term control matter.

Physician-reviewed patient information

Overview

Hypertension is diagnosed from repeated, correctly performed measurements rather than symptoms alone. Many people feel well even when blood pressure remains high.

A suitable cuff, five minutes of seated rest, supported arm position and repeated readings improve accuracy. Home measurements or ambulatory monitoring may help distinguish persistent hypertension from a white-coat effect.

Long-term control reduces the risk of stroke, heart failure, kidney disease and vascular injury. Salt reduction, physical activity, weight management, sleep and prescribed medicines are considered together.
